Tomorrow is the return of The X-Files. Or more accurately, tonight at midnight. I won't be seeing it until Saturday, most likely, and that's because I'm all mature and patient and shit like that. But I'm still nearly vibrating with anticipation as I sit here in my chair. The fact that I'm avoiding spoilers like they carry the black plague is only amping up my excitement.
The reviews over at RottenTomatoes are putting the movie in the 30% positive range (s far - there are more coming in all the time, so it's very early), which is the perfect range for most people to hate it and for me to love it based on my prior experience with the "Tomatometer" system. The fans over at the X-Files News site have seen it and say it's a keeper, and that's valuable info. There are reportedly lots of fan moments like references to previous episodes and characters, which... yeah, I should be watching this thing right now.
Oh, but the point of this post, right. I don't think this movie is going to do well. People got burned by the show overstaying its welcome, the reviews seemingly (again, it's early) aren't going to help much, and it's surrounded by an assload of summer movies. If you had released this in September, yeah, I think it would win its weekend. Now, though? Not such a good idea. I fully expect The Dark Knight to continue its reign at the top of the box office heap this weekend, and I think even Step Brothers might beat out the Files as well, although I hope to god not considering that it looks about as funny as boiled intestines. The best thing this movie has going for it is the very reasonable budget of $35 million. I just hope that the budget is low enough, and that the opening weekend is big enough, to get us another movie. Because Mulder and Scully still have to stop the alien invasion, and considering that it's scheduled for December of 2012, they're running low on time here. We can't wait another six years for someone to give us another movie out of pity, and that means all the Philes and even lesser fans need to show the hell up and support our troops, or agents, or ex-agents or whatever.
